What a watermark is actually for
Attribution more than protection. A photo that travels without your name on it loses its connection to you almost immediately and a small, tidy mark fixes that without spoiling the picture. That is the case for a corner mark at modest opacity.
Protection is a different job. If you’re sending proofs to a client before they pay, the mark needs to make the image unusable as a finished product, which means tiling it across the whole frame. It is uglier on purpose.
Making it readable on any photo
White text disappears against a bright sky and dark text disappears in shadow and a batch of photos will have both. The soft shadow option keeps a single colour legible across all of them without the heavy outlined look of a stroked font.
Keep the originals
The mark is drawn into the pixels. There is no layer to switch off later, so treat the watermarked copies as exports and keep the clean originals somewhere safe.
Common questions
Will a watermark stop people using my photos?
It stops casual reuse and it attributes the image when it is shared, which is what most people actually want. It doesn’t stop a determined person: a corner mark can be cropped off in seconds and even a tiled mark can be removed with enough effort. Tiling makes that effort much larger, which is why the option is here.
Where should the watermark go?
A corner mark is the least intrusive and the easiest to crop out. Across the subject is the hardest to remove and the most distracting. Tiled across the whole image at low opacity is the usual compromise for proofs and previews you’re sending to a client before they pay.
Why is the size a percentage?
So a folder of photos at different resolutions all get a mark that looks the same size relative to the picture. A fixed point size would be huge on a small web image and barely visible on a full resolution photo from a camera.
Can I watermark a lot of photos at once?
Yes, that is the point of the tool. Set the text and position once, drop the whole folder and download the lot as a zip. Nothing is uploaded, which matters when the photos are unreleased client work.
Does watermarking reduce quality?
The text is drawn onto the image and it is saved again, so a JPG is re-compressed once. At the default quality of 90 the difference isn’t visible. Keep your unwatermarked originals, since the mark can’t be taken back off.
