The three ways people split
Pulling out a section
One range, one file: the three pages of a contract that actually matter or the chapter someone asked for. Type the range and take the single output.
Separating a batch scan
A document feeder turns a stack of unrelated papers into one PDF. One file per page undoes that in a single step and the zip keeps them in order.
Cutting a file down to size
An upload form with a size limit and a long document. Splitting in half or into ranges, gets each part under the limit. Worth knowing that splitting isn’t the same as compressing and a single enormous scanned page will still be enormous on its own.
Page numbers here mean sheet numbers
The numbers in the range field count pages in the file, starting at one, which isn’t always the number printed on the page. A report with a cover and two pages of front matter has its "page 1" on sheet four. The thumbnails show what each sheet actually is, which is the quickest way to avoid an off-by-three.
Common questions
How do I write the page ranges?
Like you would say them: 1-3, 5, 8-10 produces three files, one with pages one to three, one with page five alone and one with pages eight to ten. Commas separate the ranges, a dash makes a range and a single number is a range of one. A range that falls outside the document is dropped rather than producing an empty file.
Can I get every page as its own file?
Yes, that is the one file per page option and it produces a zip containing one PDF per page. It is the usual choice when a scanner has bundled a stack of unrelated documents into one file.
Does splitting lose quality?
No. Each output is a new document containing the original pages, copied whole with their fonts and images. Nothing is re-rendered, so a split page is byte for byte the same content as the page it came from.
Why is each split file nearly as large as the original?
Because resources such as embedded fonts are copied into every document that needs them. A ten page report split into ten files can easily total more than the original, since the font that appeared once now appears ten times. That is normal and is the price of each file standing alone.
Can I split a password protected PDF?
Not without removing the password first. An encrypted document can’t be read at all until it is unlocked and this tool doesn’t ask for passwords, so it reports the file as protected instead.
