How to remove the background from a photo

Removing a background used to mean an hour with a selection tool. Now a small AI model can do it in a second or two and for photos of people it does it well enough for profile pictures, team pages, slides and ID-style photos. It helps to know what it is actually doing, because that explains when it works and when it’ll not.
What the model does
The tool looks at the photo and estimates, for every pixel, how much of it belongs to the person. Most pixels are clearly one or the other. The interesting ones are on the edges, especially around hair, where a single pixel may be a mix of hair and sky. Keeping that mix, rather than forcing each pixel to be all person or all background, is what makes the result look natural instead of cut out with scissors.

Getting a clean result
Start with a photo where the person is clearly separate from the background and well lit. If a faint halo of the old background remains, usually on plain studio backdrops, switch on crisper edges. What it’ll not do well
Products, pets and objects are outside what a portrait model was trained on. Crowds, people partly hidden behind things and people in costumes that blend into the scene are harder too. For those, a quick manual crop or reshooting against a plain background, is often faster than fighting the tool.

Common questions
Why is hair so difficult?
Because strands of hair are thinner than a pixel at the edges, so those pixels are partly hair and partly background. A tool that makes a hard cut-out gives a helmet shape. A matting model estimates how much of each pixel is hair, which keeps the fine edge.
Can it remove the background from a product photo?
The tool on this site is trained on people and does best with them. Products, pets and objects need a general-purpose model. For product shots on a plain background, photographing on white in the first place is still the most reliable method.
What format keeps the transparent background?
PNG. JPG can’t store transparency, so a transparent cut-out saved as JPG gets a solid background. If you choose a white or coloured background instead, JPG is fine and much smaller.
